July 26, 2006 -- Steve Saint
Steve is the son of Nate Saint, a jungle pilot, one of five men killed in 1956 by the Auca Indians, whom they were trying to reach with the Gospel. The recently released film "End of the Spear" tells the story of Steve Saint and was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the deaths of the missionaries. Two years after the killings, Steve's aunt was invited to live and minster among the very tribe that was responsible for these deaths. Steve spent school vacations visiting his aunt and forming relationships with the men who murdered his father. In 1994, Steve and his family left their home in Florida to live among the tribe in the Amazon jungle. He has since founded the Indigenous People's Technology and Education Center(I-TEC, http://itecusa.org/ ) in order to train and equip "God Followers" around the world with tools that will enable them to reach their own people and fulfill Christ's Great Commission. Steve's unique life experiences have given him a perspective on forgiveness, reconciliation and the Great Commission, a perspective that is vital to the Body of Christ.

"Deciphering the Da Vinci Code" SERMON NOTES: Connections: * Over the centuries there have been a number of attacks on the Christian faith. What are some of the ones identified in the sermon? * Why is the DaVinci Code, a novel and an upcoming movie, something that Christians should even be concerned about? Examination: Dan Brown, the author of The DaVinci Code, hurls a number of attacks against the Christian faith. Here are three specific attacks issued throughout the DVC novel. [What are the answers to these attacks?] I. First, it is important for us to know the storyline of the novel. II. But, it is important as well to know the charges that are rendered against the Christian faith. A. Charge #1. B. Charge #2. C. Charge #3. TRUTH: However, the truth about our faith leads us to respond in ways that are pleasing to God and helpful to the people with whom we relate. When Christianity is maligned, defend the faith with the truth about the ____________________. Reflection: Since our faith can be substantiated as true, there are at least two responses that we must make. [What are those responses?] Benefits: [In light of this message, what might God do through you this week?]

WHAT THE HEAVENLY FATHER CAN TEACH US ABOUT PARENTING - Part 5 - "When All Else Fails..." Ephesians 1:15-23 -- Last summer we spent some time in Psalm 127, which tells us that, "sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, children a reward." And then on January 1st we looked at Deuteronomy 4, which taught us that parents are to guide their children so that whether at home or in the backyard or wherever we might be, parents are to instruct their children in the ways of God. In other words, parents are stewards of their children. They don't own them. Instead they are their spiritual mentors, preparing them for life and adulthood. We parents are managers, caretakers of the children entrusted to our care. The problem is that children don't come with owner's manuals. Response Questions: CONFLICT - What is happening in our lives? I. Scripture teaches indirectly that parents do not own their children. They are stewards. What does it mean to be a steward of our children? PERSPECTIVE - What is God saying to us? I. God wants us to pray for the spiritual ____________ of our children. II. God wants us to pray for the spiritual _____________ of our children. RESULTS - What will happen if we embrace God's perspective? I. What are some of the results that will transpire if we obey God's Word? II. What will be some of the barriers that will keep us from embracing the truth of this passage?

Sermon Notes - Parenting is Hard Work - Part Four - "Lecture or Listen" -- : Connection (what is happening in our lives?) What are some common dreams that parents have for their children? What's good about those dreams? Where do we need to be cautious with respect to those dreams? What is the TRANSFORMING TRUTH that the biblical text (Ephesians 6:4) is teaching us? Perspective (what is God's Word saying?) I. God's Word tells us what parents must be careful NOT to do. What is it? II. God's Word also tells us what parents SHOULD do in raising their children. What is it that we SHOULD do? Results (what might happen if we obey God?)

Sermon Notes - Parenting is Hard Work - Part Three -- Connection (with the sermon): What are some common choices that parents are forced into making when it comes to raising their children? Perspective (with respect to God's Word): I. What are some of the primary characteristics of Eli's story and the implications it has for our "calling as parents"? II. What is the Transforming Truth that God wants to teach us from the story of Eli? A. Why is it that we don't always live in accordance with this Transforming Truth? B. What steps can we take to live out this "parenting principle" in our own lives? Results (with respect to our decisions)

What God the Father Can Teach Us About Parenting, Part 2: "Failure Can Be Virtuous": What does Proverbs 22:15 teach us about children? Why is it appropriate for us to look to God for insight into parenting? Jesus told a parable that has significance for us with respect to parenting. Look at Luke 14 and meditate on the three stories contained in this chapter. Why did Jesus tell these stories? Who are the characters and why are they important to the story? What is the story ultimately about? What is the Transforming Truth that is being taught? What is redemptive parenting? Why is redemptive parenting such an important issue? What can we do to start implementing redemptive parenting in our own lives? Think of some ways you need to incorporate redemptive parenting into your life as a parent or grandparent.

What is the Transforming Truth that summarizes what this text is about? What does it mean to create a "God-saturated environment" for our children? Why is the creation of a God-saturated environment so crucial to parenting today? How can you go about creating this type of environment in your home? What are some forces that keep parents from creating a God-saturated environment? What are some signs in your own life that you might not be living out a life that makes much of God in all you do? After listening to the sermon, what does God want you to do to be more purposeful in your parenting?

SERMON NOTES (Before you listen to this morning's "ministry of the Word," read the questions below. They are designed to help you to listen to specific issues that will be addressed in the sermon. You will specifically want to listen to the one TRANSFORMING TRUTH that summarizes what the biblical text is teaching. Review these notes during the week so that the Spirit of God and the Word of God can transform you. At the beginning of the sermon, Pastor Shields will read from 2 Corinthians 8:7; 9:10-11 and 15. Read these verses again. What is the appeal that the Apostle Paul is making to the Corinthian believers (and to us)? Take some time to read 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 on your own. What did you discover and hear regarding the TRANSFORMING TRUTH in this passage? Write it in the space below. I. RESISTANCE. Why is it that we have this natural inclination to resist giving of our material resources to other people or organizations? II. REASONS. Why is it that we should make it a habit to give generously and on a regular basis? III. ROUTINES. What are some things we can do to be more effective in the "discipline" and "grace" of generous giving? As you meditate on God's Word, what do you plan to do this week to engage in the ministry of giving? Think about what you can do as an individual or as a family.

Pastor Shields read sections of Mark's Gospel [Mark 1:14-28; Mark 10:35-45] and also from Ephesians 4:20-24. What was the conclusion that was made with respect to these three passages of Scripture? Specifically, what is the transforming truth that we should draw from these passages? Consider these questions: 1) I. When we use the term "ministry" what do we mean and who should minister? 2) II. Why is it important for Christians to engage in ministry? 3) III. Where is ministry supposed to take place? 4) IV. What do we need to do in order for ministry to take place in and through us? 5) As you ponder God's Word, what have you already done to prepare yourself for ministry? Perhaps a better question is, "What do you need to start doing today to obey God's will and function as "His minister"?

Midweek Meditations: As you listened to the sermon, what did you discover about the meaning of "community"? What is it and why is it important for the Christian? The central text for today's message was Hebrews 10:19-25. What was the writer trying to accomplish in this passage? What is the one TRANSFORMING TRUTH that summarizes what this text is teaching? A question that was answered in the sermon had to do with the characteristics of Christian community. What are they? If Christians were to commit to being involved in "two-dimensional" community, what would happen? Look at Acts 2:42-47 for further insight. What are you going to do specifically as a result of reflecting on God's Word today? Review these notes during the week so that the Spirit of God and the Word of God can transform you.

Positioning Yourself for Change -- The Bible as my Guidebook -- Why is it important for us to consider the need for spiritual transformation? Many times we use the words "bible," "Scripture," and "the Word of God" synonymously. What do these words and phrases mean? Why should we put such strong confidence in the Bible? What benefits do we gain from exposing our "souls" to the Word of God? Why don't we listen, read, and study the Bible more than we do? "Positioning Yourself for Change" We all have ideas about what kind of changes should take place in our lives. But what does the Bible teach us about the primary motivation for change? What specific kind of change does God have in mind for all Christians? Above and beyond comfort, success, or fame, what change is God committed to making in our lives? As you listen to the sermon, what are some specific texts that describe God's constant presence in our lives? In addition, what is God present to do in our lives? What is the TRANSFORMING TRUTH that summarizes what the text is all about? The sermon addressed the issue of worship in our lives. Midweek Meditations: *If we assume correctly that "songs of ascent" were pilgrim songs, how would Psalm 132 have helped Hebrew travelers making their way to Jerusalem? *Who is the "Mighty One of Jacob" to whom the psalmist refers in verse 2? *Why is it important for readers (and Hebrew pilgrims) to know David's aspirations in verses 3-5? Of what possible relevance does this have to our lives in the 21st Century? *The psalmist refers to the retrieval of the Ark of the Covenant in verses 6-7. The writer is referring to an event recorded in 1 Samuel 7. You would be wise to read 1 Samuel 7 as background to verses 6 and 7 of Psalm 132. But why is the psalmist giving us this background? *Notice in verses 11-18 that the psalmist makes reference to 2 Samuel 7:12-14 and Zechariah 2:12. Why does the writer allude to these passages? What is his purpose in doing so? *Try to identify the TRANSFORMING TRUTH of the passage once again. Where are some of the places where God wants to implement this truth into your life?

Read Psalm 131 a couple of times to renew your understanding of the text. The Psalm is describing a contrast with two ways of thinking about life. How do you know the psalmist is trying to display a contrast? What two kinds of lifestyles is the psalmist portraying. What does David mean when he says that he does "not get involved with things too great or too difficult for me?" What has the psalmist done in verse 3 to bring him to the point that he can say, "Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself like a little weaned child with its mother." Psalm 130 - Pastor Harry Shields What is the psalmist describing when he makes mention of "the depths" in verse 1? Why would he be crying for help in verse 2? The sermon made mention of two different references to God - LORD and Lord. What are the implications behind these two names? Read through Psalm 130 once again. What do you notice about the characteristics of God? Two words are used to give instruction to the readers of the psalms. One of the words is "wait" and the other is "hope." Why are these words significant in Psalm 130. How does this psalm relate to your life, both in terms of your past and your present? How might you use this psalm to give spiritual counsel to someone whose behavior has brought great pain to other people? Assume that the person is repentant- how could you use this psalm to minister to them?

What is Solomon referring to when he states that some activities can end up being "vain"? What does it mean to have the Lord build the house or watch over the city? How does the Lord build houses? Look again at verse three. What does Solomon mean when he says that the Lord "gives sleep to those He loves"? How and when does He provide sleep? What is the point in verse 4 when it says that the children are "like arrows in the hand of a warrior"? What is the Spirit of God trying to teach us in Psalm 127? Pastor Harry Shields: Psalm 121 Questions: 1) Psalm 121 is identified as a psalm of Ascents. What did you learn from the sermon as to the meaning of this title? 2) Verse 1 of Psalm 121 makes reference to the "mountains." What would an ancient Hebrew pilgrim think about when he/she saw the mountains? 3) How is Yahweh (Lord) described in this psalm? What is He described as doing in the passage? 4) What is the meaning of verse 6? Specifically, what possible danger could the "moon" bring to our lives? 5) What did you learn from the sermon about the phrase in verse 8: "your coming and going"? What is the psalmist trying to communicate with this phrase? 6) Psalm 121 raises some problems. God is declared to be the believer's "Protector"! 1. Take a couple if minutes to read through 1 John 5:14:21. In fact, read the passage a couple of times to get a feel from what the Apostle John is trying to tell his readers. 2. What word did you notice that the writer uses frequently throughout this passage? What is his purpose in using this word? 3. What do you think John is talking about in verses 16 and 17 when he makes a reference to a "sin that brings death"? Why does the reader need to know about this sin? 4. What does the writer mean in verse 18 when he says, "everyone who is born of God does not sin"? Does this mean that Christians do not sin? Explain your answer. 5. Why does the Apostle John close with the exhortation to "guard (ourselves) from idols"? 6. How could the information in these verses transform your life over the next week? How does God want to use this passage to make you a more effective follower of our savior?

Midweek Meditations -- # Read through the passage (1 John 5:6-13) a couple of times before answering the questions below. After reading the text, what connection do you see between this text and the preceding paragraph (4:20-5:5)? # The Apostle John makes reference to "water, the blood, and the Spirit" in verses 6-8. What is John referring to when he uses these terms? # What does the writer mean by "God's testimony" and why is that important to his readers? (5:9 and 11) # We live in a pluralistic culture where all sorts of religious ideas are considered equal. What bearing does verse 12 have on the idea of religious pluralism? # See if you can state the TRANSFORMING TRUTH once again. What implications were brought out in the sermon with respect to this truth? What other implications do you see as being applicable to our lives this week?

1. Start the review process by reading today's text, 1 John 4:20-5:5, a couple of times. What do you recall about what the Apostle John is saying in this passage? What is the TRANSFORMING TRUTH God wants you to think about throughout the week? 2. John makes reference to "hating" one's brother. What does that really mean? Is this an outward display of hatred? To what is the Word of God referring? 3. Several times the Apostle John has made reference to "loving one's brother." Why is this so essential to the Christian faith? 4. What does the writer mean whenever he exhorts us to "keep God's commands"? Isn't this legalism all over again? How in the world can we "keep His command" (v. 3)? 5. What does the writer mean in verse 4 when he says that our faith "has conquered the world"? 6. What will this text (and sermon) require of you this week as God continues His "transforming" work in your life?

1. Take a few minutes to read 1 John 4:7-19. You will notice that John returns to a subject he already addressed in 1 John 2:7-11 and 3:11-18. Why does the biblical writer keep addressing this theme so many times? 2. Read the passage again and think of it in terms of the following units: 4:7, 4:8-11, 4:12-19 . What is the biblical writer doing in each of these three units? The sermon addressed these same units as well. 3. What did you identify as the one TRANSFORMING TRUTH in this passage? Or to put it another way, "What does God say is one of the primary validating features of our faith?" 4. If God is calling us to love and to validate our faith through love, where are some places where we might be called upon to love this coming week? What do we need to do to prepare for this lifestyle of love?

1. 1 John 4:1 states, "Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits." What does the expression "test the spirits" mean? Who is to do this testing? 2. How can a person know if a "truth-claim" is from God or from some other source? What specific steps does 1 John 4:1-6 tell us to take in this "testing" process? 3. Many people claim that they have a right to believe whatever they want. Others would say that we can't really know truth in an absolute sense. how would the Apostle John answer these claims? 4. What concepts have you heard in the marketplace of ideas that challenge biblical truth? Think of something you have seen or heard in the last week that runs counter to biblical truth. How do you know that the statement is true or false?

1. As you think back over 1 John what was the biblical author's primary purpose in writing this letter? What was going on in the world of the first century that prompted the author's letter? How was the first century situation like our own? 2. The sermon made reference to the "love-test." How would you describe in your own words what constitutes the "love-test"? 3. How would a person know that an individual was practicing biblical love as opposed to good deeds? For instance, people who are part of some religious cults demonstrate love. But how is this different from the kind of love John is talking about in 1 John 3:11-24? 4. What are some specific acts of love that God has called you to in the past week? What are some ways that you can pass the love-test in the coming week?

Midweek Meditations 4/17/05: 1) Read 1 Chronicles 29:1-22. What do you notice about David's attitude toward giving? What prompted him to give and to encourage others to give? What do you notice about God in these verses? 2) Read Ezra 3:10-13. Compare this text with Haggai 2:3 and Zechariah 4:10. Why were some people in the Ezra passage weeping instead of rejoicing? What does that teach us about God and His view of buildings? 3) Read Mark 13:1-2. Why didn't Jesus join with the disciples in admiring the temple? 4) What TRANSFORMING TRUTH did Pastor Shields draw from these passages as it relates to our celebration this week at Calvary Bible Church? 5) If we are to look beyond our buildings and focus on Christ, what do you know for certain that Christ wants us to do as the people of God, the Church? 6) What are some ways that we can specifically focus on Christ and obey Him this week? Where might that obedience take place in your life?

Midweek Meditations -- For the week of 4/3/05 -- 1. Take three minutes to read through today's sermon text once again (1 John 2:28-3:10). a.. Why does John refer to his readers as "little children"? b. What is the writer looking forward to in verse 28? c. What is the mark of a person being a Christian according to verse 29? 2. What problem does the Apostle John seem to be referring to in verses 1-3? Look especially at verse 1b. 3. Notice that on at least three occasions the Apostle John uses the word "remain." What is the significance of this term? 4. Notice three themes that are interwoven in this passage: (the coming of Christ; the issue of sin and righteousness; the issue of remaining in Jesus). How do these three themes relate to one another? 5. What did you discover as the Transforming Truth in today's text and sermon? 6. In what ways does God want to use this text in your life in the coming week? What does He want to change in your life? What motivates you to make these changes?

March 27, 2005 -- Pastor Harry Shields -- Midweek Meditations For the week of 3/27/05 # John 11 has a series of scenes all of which are related to the death of Lazarus. And in every scene, there was an element of fear. What do you notice about the various forms of fear related to # The Disciples (JN 11:1-8)? # Mary and Martha (JN 11:1-3, 17-22)? # The Religious Leaders (JN 11:45-48)? # After listening to the sermon, what is Gods promise to those facing the fear-factor? # Compare John 11:25-26 with John 11:38-40. Martha initially said she believed what Jesus told her. But her actions betrayed her true sentiments. Why do you think Martha was hesitant to have Jesus open her brothers tomb? What fears might be evident in her actions? # What was the Transforming Truth revealed in the sermon? # How does this sermon prepare you to live this next week? What are some areas of prayer related to the fear-factors in your life?
